Proposal for The Grand Hotel Amsterdam
May 2007

During the spring of 2007 I studied in the department of Man & Communication at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. This project was a proposal for The Grand Hotel Amsterdam. At the time the hotel was undergoing a renovation and the Design Academy was asked to create a design to accompany the new rooms. The design involved two parts: The first was to create a facade that would be installed on the outside of the door frame leading into the room; The second was to bring the design into the room and give it a second life on the wall behind the bed.

My inspiration for the room came from working on the floor with scattered laundry. Any traveler can relate to folding and unfolding their suitcases, so i created the designs around the process of unpacking. In the first image the pattern is made of clothing folded into 45 degree triangles(click below to see a detail of the pattern) which are then paired and stacked to create the facade around the door frame. In the second image I brought the clothes into the room and unpacked them, arranging them in a spiral overlooking the bed.

Originally, the hotel was looking for these patterns to be printed and stretched into the spaces, so I collaged the images together for the digital print to resemble the stained glass windows that run up and down the main stairway in the hotel. Thus you can see in the detailed images, the patterns are made of broken lines and multiple light sources to resemble the texture and lighting of stained glass.
